The Student Login: A How-To Guide
Chalk and Chart has two kinds of sign-in: your parent account, where you plan and record everything, and a student login, a simpler view your child signs in to on their own. This guide shows what a student sees and, just as important, what a student can and cannot change, so you know exactly what you are handing over.
What a student login is
A student login is an optional, separate sign-in tied to one child. It shows only that child's own work: their assignments, reading log, instructional time, and grades. It never shows your billing, your settings, the other students, or any of the planning tools. A student cannot change your school year, create lessons, or enter their own grades. In short, it is a safe, focused view where a child can see what is due and check off what they finish.
You stay in control. Everything a student does flows back to your parent account (a checked-off assignment shows as complete for you; a book they add appears in your Reading Log). Nothing a student does can undo your records beyond marking their own work done or adding their own books.
Setting up and managing a student login
You create and manage student logins from the Family page, not from this view. In short:
- On the Family page, find the student and click Add login.
- Chalk and Chart creates a username and a 12-character password. Write these down and give them to your child. This is the only time the full password is shown.
- Use Manage login on the Family page later to reset the password, share the calendar (see below), or remove the login entirely.
For the full walkthrough, see the Family guide. Your child then signs in at the normal sign-in page using the details you gave them, and lands on the page shown here.
Finding your way around
At the top, the student sees a friendly greeting with their name, grade, and family name, and a row of tabs.
The tabs are, left to right:
| Tab | What the student sees |
|---|---|
| Calendar | Their assignments laid out by date, in a Daily, Weekly, or Monthly view. This is the home tab. |
| Assignments | A simple to-do list of lessons to finish, and a "Done" list of what they have completed. |
| My Goals | The goals set for or by this student, where they can track progress and add their own. |
| Reading | Their reading log, where they can add books and mark them finished. |
| Time | A read-only view of their logged instructional time. |
| Grades | A read-only list of the grades you have recorded for them. |
The Calendar (home tab)
The Calendar is the first thing a student sees when they sign in. It shows the assignments you scheduled for them, each landing on the day it is planned for (or on its due date when you set one), in the student's own color.
- Use the Daily, Weekly, and Monthly buttons to switch views, and the ‹, Today, and › controls to move around.
- A completed assignment shows with a line through it.
- If you turned on Share calendar for this student (on the Family page), the events you plan on your Calendar also appear here. If you have not shared the calendar, the student still sees their assignments; they just do not see your family events.
The calendar is for viewing. Students check work off from the Assignments tab (next).
The Assignments tab
This is where a student does the one thing they are meant to do here: mark work finished.
- The Assignments (N) card lists everything still to do, with the subject and the date (its due date if you set one, otherwise the day it is scheduled for).
- Clicking Mark done moves a lesson to the Done list and records it as complete for you.
- The Done list shows finished work; Undo puts an item back on the to-do list.
Any URL you typed into a lesson's Notes shows up here as a clickable link, so you can point a student straight to a video or worksheet.
Submit an Assignment
Below the assignments list, the Assignments tab has a Submit an Assignment card where a student can fill out and turn in a worksheet online, no printing required:
- A Book Review (title, author, what it was about, favorite part, rating, and whether they would recommend it).
- A Field Trip Journal (where they went, what they saw, what they learned, and a favorite moment).
The student picks a worksheet, fills it in, and clicks Submit. What they turn in flows straight to your Needs grading card so you can read it and, if you like, record a grade for it.
What this does for you: A lesson a student marks done becomes complete on your side too. If it has no grade yet, it then appears on your Needs grading card (Dashboard) and Pending grading card (Grades page), ready for you to grade. Submitted Book Reviews and Field Trip Journals arrive in the same Needs grading card, each with a Review button.
The My Goals tab
The My Goals tab shows the goals set for this student, and lets the student add goals of their own. They can color in a goal's progress, check off its steps, and mark it achieved. Goals a student adds also appear for you on the parent School Year Goals page, so you can follow along.
The Reading tab
The Reading tab is the other place a student can add to their own records.
- The student can type a book title (and author) and add it to their reading log.
- They can mark a book Done reading when they finish it, or Start reading an assigned book.
- They see only their own books, grouped into Currently Reading, Assigned Reading, and Finished. There is no student-picker row, because a student only ever sees their own log.
Books a student adds and finishes show up in your Reading Log on the parent side.
The Time and Grades tabs (view only)
The Time and Grades tabs let a student see their progress, but not change it.
- Time shows their logged hours and days against your goals, plus the list of entries. Students cannot add or edit time here; you log time from the parent Instructional Time and Calendar pages.
- Grades shows the grades you have recorded, on the same 1 to 4 or percentage scale you chose for them. Students cannot add, change, or delete grades.
What a student can and cannot do
A quick summary, so there are no surprises:
| A student CAN | A student CANNOT |
|---|---|
| See their assignments on a calendar (Daily/Weekly/Monthly) | Create, edit, or delete lessons |
| Mark an assignment done, or undo it | Enter, change, or delete grades |
| Submit a Book Review or Field Trip Journal worksheet | Grade their own submitted worksheets |
| Add books to their reading log and mark them finished | Log or edit instructional time |
| View their own time and grades | See other students, or the Family, Portfolio, or Settings pages |
| Open links you put in a lesson's notes | Change your school year, plan, or billing |
If you open the student page while signed in as a parent (or not signed in at all), or if you have not created a login for that child yet, the page shows a short "Student sign-in" prompt instead of a student's work.
