Homeschooling is about so much more than checking boxes or completing assignments. It's about cultivating a love of learning, discovering each child's unique gifts, and creating memories that last a lifetime. But as every homeschooling family knows, those memories often come with a growing stack of paperwork, lesson plans, photos, attendance records, and student work that can quickly become overwhelming to organize.

That's where Chalk & Chart comes in.

The Story Behind Chalk & Chart

Homeschooling has always been close to my heart. As a second-generation homeschooler, I experienced firsthand the flexibility, creativity, and lifelong love of learning that homeschooling can provide. Those experiences shaped not only my education but also my appreciation for the dedication it takes to document and preserve each school year.

When my husband and I began homeschooling, we encountered the same challenges as every homeschool family, especially in highly regulated states with additional requirements: keeping track of attendance, samples of student work, and the curriculum used for learning. After completing two years of homeschooling, and with our previous evaluator complimenting our portfolio layout, we had the idea to develop a better way to design and organize homeschool portfolios. We realized there wasn't a solution that combined everything we utilized, along with the additional features we wanted, into one easy-to-use platform.

Professionally, I've spent my career helping people navigate complex systems. My background in healthcare, education, and software implementation has given me experience designing workflows, creating educational resources, and helping users get the most from technology. Those experiences taught me that the best software should simplify life, not complicate it.

My husband, a professional software developer, shared that same vision. Together, we combined our unique backgrounds to create a platform designed specifically for homeschool families.

In May 2025, we began designing and developing what would become Chalk & Chart. What started as an idea around our kitchen table quickly grew into a passion project. The idea of Chalk & Chart took a backseat to life until this year, when we began homeschooling with a new evaluator. After our end-of-year evaluation, where she also commented that the way I organized my portfolio was one of the most organized, she had seen, we decided it was time to move forward with developing our platform. Together, we've spent countless hours planning, designing, testing, and refining every feature with one goal in mind: creating a tool that makes homeschool recordkeeping simple, organized, and enjoyable. This isn't just another app to us—it’s something we’ve built from the ground up for families like yours and ours.
